The 2023 result
In 2023, Rawiri Waititi (Te Pāti Māori) won Waiariki by 15,891 votes over Toni Boynton (Labour). The candidate vote split Te Pāti Māori 76.3% to Labour 19.9%, a margin of 56.4 points.
The 2023 winner, Rawiri Waititi, is standing again.
On the party vote, Labour led with 43.7%, ahead of Te Pāti Māori on 38.3%. That's a split: voters gave the seat to Te Pāti Māori but more of their party votes to Labour, so the local candidate's own pull matters.
What it would take to change hands
Labour would need a swing of about 28.2 points from Te Pāti Māori to take it: each point that moves from one to the other closes the gap by two.
Māori electorates often move differently from the national party vote, so the calculator keeps them with their 2023 party unless you choose otherwise.
