The 2023 result
In 2023, Tākuta Ferris (Te Pāti Māori) won Te Tai Tonga by 2,824 votes over Rino Tirikatene (Labour). The candidate vote split Te Pāti Māori 48.4% to Labour 37.8%, a margin of 10.7 points. Its boundaries have changed for 2026, so the 2026 seat isn't exactly the same area that voted in 2023.
The 2023 winner, Tākuta Ferris, is standing again here, but now as an independent.
On the party vote, Labour led with 37.0%, ahead of Te Pāti Māori on 22.9%. That's a split: voters gave the seat to Te Pāti Māori but more of their party votes to Labour, so the local candidate's own pull matters.
Worth knowing: 2023 winner (Te Pāti Māori) was expelled from the party and stands as an independent. The calculator's default pick is the Te Pāti Māori candidate.
What it would take to change hands
On the 2026 boundaries, the 2023 votes would put Te Pāti Māori 10.1 points ahead of Labour (an estimate by The Tally Room). Labour would need a swing of about 5.1 points from Te Pāti Māori to take it: each point that moves from one to the other closes the gap by two.
Māori electorates often move differently from the national party vote, so the calculator keeps them with their 2023 party unless you choose otherwise.
