The 2023 result

In 2023, Takutai Tarsh Kemp (Te Pāti Māori) won Tāmaki Makaurau by 42 votes over Peeni Henare (Labour). The candidate vote split Te Pāti Māori 40.1% to Labour 39.9%, a margin of 0.2 points.

The current MP is Oriini Kaipara (Te Pāti Māori), elected at a by-election after 2023, who is standing again here.

On the party vote, Labour led with 43.4%, ahead of Te Pāti Māori on 30.2%. That's a split: voters gave the seat to Te Pāti Māori but more of their party votes to Labour, so the local candidate's own pull matters.

What it would take to change hands

Labour would need a swing of about 0.1 points from Te Pāti Māori to take it: each point that moves from one to the other closes the gap by two.

Māori electorates often move differently from the national party vote, so the calculator keeps them with their 2023 party unless you choose otherwise.
